Author Biography and Book Synopsis Len Harris Biography Len Harris is a Cockney, born in London, England, within the sound of the bells of St. Mary le Bow. When World War II broke out, he, like thousands of London kids, was evacuated to the country. Disenchanted by rural life, he soon returned to the city and his first job, a bicycle messenger for Reuters News Agency, where each night he cycled through Blitz-razed streets delivering material to the newspaper offices. At eighteen he enlisted in the RAF as a pilot, but after a misunderstanding between him, his plane and the ground, he was retrained as an air gunner. When demobbed, he returned to returned to journalism and worked for various newspapers and magazines. In 1961, he emigrated to the United States where he worked for newspapers, founded a public relations firm, hosted radio and TV shows, and authored three novels. He now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Book Synopses Artos by Len Harris The legend of King Arthur has provided a rich harvest for many authors. He has also been remembered by a number of names. One of these was Artos, the Bear. Author Len Harris takes a fresh approach to the legend, discarding visions of a noble sophisticate with a taste in circular furnishings for one who is gauche, fundamental, licentious and politically shrewd. After the Romans depart from Britain, new invaders arrive – Jutes, Angles and Saxons. Artos, son of a petty British chieftain, attempts to unite the squabbling tribes and prevent their annihilation, successfully completing his mission; Artos is proclaimed king of the newly-formed tribal confederation. Harris's story records Artos’s battle, victories and defeats. It is replete with accounts of love, mysticism, loyalty, treachery and death, which glorified and stained that period of ancient Britain. Russian Roulette Len Harris Sam Kantor is a far stretch from Chandler and Hammett's concept of the private eye. Sam is more likely to solve his cases by accident, rather than design. But somehow he manages to come up with the solution. His latest case starts off innocently enough. He is hired to accompany a client to deliver a package. But when he is knocked unconscious and his client turns up dead in Sam's office, the trail becomes like a Matryoshka doll. Each lead he uncovers reveals another within. Sam tracks down members of a poker club who have been bankrolling the sale of stolen Russian icons. When two of them are murdered, Sam becomes a suspect. He escapes being shot and blown up before being offered a partnership in a narcotics business. With every step Sam is drawn inexorably towards the quicksand, until the final moment when the sands threaten to close over him. Cockney Len Harris Cockney is a semi-autobiographical World War Two novel seen through the eyes of an air gunner, part of an RAF Lancaster bomber crew. He describes what it was like growing up in the East End of London in the early pre-war days, and how he was affected by the Blitz on his beloved city. When his plane is shot down during a raid on Germany, he endures numerous adventures in his attempt to return to Britain. Biography Annette Langer Annette Langer left a successful career with the Federal Government, taking early retirement in 2003. Langer grew up in the Midwest near Chicago and then migrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998 where she continues to grow up. Although she has dabbled in writing much of her life, it was only then that she began in earnest to focus on it with a purpose. Her book Healing Through Humor: Change Your Focus, Change Your Life! was the result and has been very well received by reviewers and readers alike. Experts always say “write what you know,” and she certainly did. The book chronicles Langer’s own numerous, personal health issues overcome by following the doctor’s orders and by seeing the funny side of some not-so-funny difficulties, ranging from brain injury to breast cancer. She skillfully weaves into her stories a generous mix of humor as well as sage advice to anyone trying to heal from serious injury, illness, or any challenge in life. Langer was a finalist in two categories in a recent Writers Digest national writing competition, competing among over 18,000 entrants. She has also contributed to the Livermore Wine Country Literary Harvest Anthology and O’Brien’s Literary Speculator Bright Beginnings Anthology. When not pursuing her writing and speaking events, she also keeps busy as a police volunteer with her local police department. Langer is working currently on her latest book, A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to the World: Diary of a Fearless Travel Agent, detailing her travels to all seven continents. Healing Through Humor: Change Your Focus Change Your Life Annette Langer What’s funny about a brain injury or breast cancer? You’ll be surprised. Annette Langer has created just the “portable support group” a person needs to get through hard times with her easy-to-read book. It chronicles her many personal challenges in life, including brain injury suffered in a head-on auto accident and breast cancer. All the while Langer stays upbeat and positive, guiding the reader to discover the inner strength to meet his or her own challenges. This feel-good book is sprinkled with generous doses of humorous, personal stories surrounding the author’s various mishaps and maladies as well as sage advice on coping with struggles. Her true-life stories show the “funny side” of some not-so-funny challenges. You’ll find such chapters as “How to Bathe While Bandaged or in a Plaster Cast” and “My First Cruise…My First Gallbladder Attack” to tickle your funny bone. Other parts of the book offer more serious, practical coping techniques. You’re left with the realization that better times are possible despite the obstacles, and you’ll learn ways to discover your own funny stories in the process. Healing Through Humor is the perfect get-well gift for anyone struggling to overcome a medical challenge or even as a reward for yourself when you’re facing less than sunny times. Take the journey to self-empowerment and survival, even in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances, with a good laugh along the way.
